Our Full Review

We bought the full Hatch Restore 2 for our bedroom and loved it so much that the Mini was an obvious choice for our kids' rooms. At $50, it's a fraction of the cost, and it nails the three features parents actually need: nightlight, sound machine, and a "time to wake" indicator that saved our Saturday mornings.

The concept is simple. Set the light to a warm dim glow at bedtime (nightlight mode), play soft rain or white noise all night, and schedule the light to change color in the morning when it's okay to get out of bed. Our 4-year-old learned the system in one night -- orange light means stay in bed, green light means you can come find us. We went from 5:30 AM wake-up invasions to peaceful mornings within a week.

Unlike the Restore 2, the Mini requires no subscription. All sounds and features are included out of the box. The sound library is smaller (about 10 options versus the Restore 2's hundreds), but it covers the essentials: white noise, rain, ocean, and a few lullabies. The speaker quality is decent for a nightlight-sized device -- not audiophile grade, but plenty good for background sleep sounds.

The device is controlled entirely through the Hatch app (no physical controls beyond a touch-to-dim on top). This is both a pro and a con -- it means kids can't accidentally change settings, but it also means you need your phone to adjust anything. The app works well and setup takes about 5 minutes.

Battery life and portability are not features here -- it's a plug-in device. But it's compact enough to fit on any nightstand and the cord is long enough to reach most outlets. We now have two running every night and both have been bulletproof for three months.

How We Tested

Tested nightly for 3 months in two kids' rooms (ages 2 and 4). Tested all sound options for sleep effectiveness. Measured light output at various brightness levels. Tested time-to-wake color change accuracy over 90 days. Compared sound quality against a dedicated Hatch Rest+ sound machine.

Who Is This For?

Parents with toddlers and young kids who need a combined nightlight and sound machine. Families struggling with early morning wake-ups. Anyone who wants a simpler, subscription-free alternative to the Hatch Restore 2. Not ideal if you want smart home integration or an extensive sound library.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pay for a subscription?+

No. Unlike the Hatch Restore 2, all features on the Mini are free. No subscription required, ever.

Can I use it as a regular nightlight?+

Yes, you can set it to a constant soft glow in any color. Many parents use it as a nightlight with the sound features turned off.

Will it work as a travel sound machine?+

It requires a power outlet, so it's not battery-powered. But it's compact enough to pack for trips. We bring ours to hotels and grandparents' houses.

How does it compare to the Hatch Restore 2?+

The Restore 2 has a better speaker, more sounds, sunrise simulation, and sleep content -- but costs $200 and has a subscription. The Mini covers the basics for kids at $50 with no subscription. For adults, get the Restore 2. For kids, the Mini is perfect.
