The Coway Airmega AP-1512HH has been the Wirecutter's top pick for years, and after running it in our open-plan living room for four months, I understand why. It doesn't try to be fancy. It just cleans the air extremely well and does it quietly enough that you forget it's there.
The 4-stage filtration system is the real differentiator. Pre-filter catches hair and large particles, an activated carbon filter handles odors, the True HEPA filter gets 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns, and the ionizer (Vital Ion) adds a final layer. Our two cats generate an absurd amount of dander, and the Coway handles it without breaking a sweat. The pre-filter is washable, which saves money over time.
